Australian batter Ashton Turner makes his return to Durham for the T20 Blast following Tristan Stubbs' call-up for South Africa A's tour to Sri Lanka, which would rule him out of the tournament. Stubbs' absence meant fortune for Turner, as he is all set to make his return to the side.
The South African wicketkeeper batter was expected to join up with the Durham squad right after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023; however, his inclusion in the South Africa A side meant his further unavailability for Durham.
It is also worth noting that Turner captained Durham in 2022, but his stint as skipper was hindered by a shoulder injury. Turner would be expected to lead Durham to glory after his success in lifting the Big Bash League and the Marsh Cup as captain.
Being one of the five sides without a T20 Blast title, Durham would be keen on availing Turner's services. Furthermore, the team has not reached the knockout stages of the tournament for the last four years and would therefore, be looking to keep all of it behind and step up in the ongoing tournament.
They kick off their 2023 campaign with a clash against Northamptonshire on Friday, May 26.
It is great news to have Ashton returning to Durham this season: Marcus North
After the announcement of Turner joining Durham, Durham's Director of Cricket, Marcus North, came forward and opined that it was great news for the side that Turner had joined up with Durham once again.
"It is great news to have Ashton returning to Durham this season. He joins us on the back of an outstanding season for Perth Scorchers and Western Australia, where his experience and leadership skills have once again been evident for all to see," Marcus North was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.
Furthermore, Turner also reflected on his return to Durham and revealed that he was very excited about the 2023 campaign.
"I'm excited to be joining up with Durham again for this year's Blast campaign. We have an exciting squad, and we have high expectations for the group this year. Hopefully we can achieve some success and have some fun along the way," Turner said.
