Former first-class cricketer Abhay Sharma is on the verge of being appointed as the head coach of the Uganda national team ahead of their debut in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

With his extensive coaching experience, including roles with India A, India-U19s, and the Indian women's cricket team, Sharma brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. The 54-year-old's most recent coaching stint was with the Delhi Ranji team.

"Abhay Sharma has been offered the head coach position with the Uganda national team. He is expected to take charge soon," a source was quoted as saying by The Week.

Uganda, who secured their place in the T20 World Cup during the Africa Qualifier last November, will kickstart their preparations with a two-week training camp in Sri Lanka next week. The camp will not only focus on sharpening their skills but also provide them with valuable match practice against local teams.

The upcoming T20 World Cup is set to be the largest ever, with 20 teams competing for glory. Alongside Uganda, other associate nations such as hosts USA, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, and Canada will also be vying for top honours.

The tournament format will see the 20 teams divided into four groups of five. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super Eight phase, where they will battle it out in two groups of four. The top two teams from each Super Eight group will then advance to the semi-finals, leading to the ultimate showdown in the final.

Uganda's T20 World Cup journey will begin in Guyana and Trinidad, where they will face tough opposition including Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea, West Indies, and New Zealand. Their opening match against Afghanistan on June 3 sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting campaign.

Having clinched their maiden World Cup qualification last year, Uganda will be eager to make their mark on the global stage. With Abhay Sharma at the helm, they aim to showcase their talent and compete fiercely against the best teams in the world.
