It was like a replay of the first ODI, but this time with a vastly different result. Defending a low total, Sri Lanka managed to come up trumps against India in the second ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the venue of the first ODI.

Sri Lanka won the toss and set out to bat first. But, they were met with the worst possible start. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Pathum Nissanka on the first ball of the match. But after that, Sri Lanka managed to avoid further damage in the powerplay even if they were scoring slowly.

The introduction of the Indian spinners then stopped Sri Lanka's middle order in its tracks. Pathum Nissanka(40 off 62) departed to start a Sri Lankan collapse engineered by Washington Sundar(3 for 30), Kuldeep Yadav(2 for 33) and Axar Patel(1 for 38). Post this collapse, it was Duntih Wellalage(39 off 35) and Kamindu Mendis(40 off 44) who kept the ship alive and took Sri Lanka to 240.

Rohit Sharma(64 off 44) started aggressively in the powerplay again and once again got to his own fifty before the 10-over mark while his opening partner Shubman Gill(35 off 44) was happy to move things at his own pace. India had relatively raced away to 97/0 in 13.2 overs and looked on target to finish the chase. Thus began the Jeffrey Vandersay show.

Vandersay(6 for 33) bowled a 7-over spell where he took each of the 6 Indian wickets to fall, leaving India from 97/0 to 147/6 in about 10 overs. Vandersay left the field for a while seemingly due to an injury, and Axar Patel(44 off 44) seemed to put this to great use until Charith Asalanka(3 for 20) dismissed him, and by that point, it was all over for India as Sri Lanka crawled their way back into a 32-run victory.
