Star India pacer Mohammed Shami has been on the road to recovery after going through an ankle surgery in March, earlier this year. Hence in a bid to return to the national side, recently, the fiery pacer decided to take part in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT 2024) by featuring for his home state Bengal. In the same vein, on Friday, November 29, he returned to the field after featuring in four games of the tournament. This time he played against Madhya Pradesh (MP), in Rajkot. Notably, the game took place at the Niranjan Shah Stadium Ground C.
For the unversed, Shami has been under rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and amid strict monitoring of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) medical team, the pacer gradually amped up his workload and resumed with slight practices initially. However, during the SMAT 2024 game against MP, he suffered an injury scare. The incident took place in the 19th over in the second innings after Bengal posted a stiff target of 190 runs.
As reported by SPORTSTAR, while stopping a ball, Shami fell down and took a jerk on the lower back part of his body. As a result, he was seen in excruciating pain while he was holding his back with his hands. However, the head of the Centre of Excellence's medical panel, Nitin Patel, rushed onto the field to attend the Amroha-based pacer.

Notably, the medical expert was evaluating Shami's overall fitness as sought by the Indian board. After receiving the treatment, he resumed bowling the pending five deliveries. Despite that, MP edged out Bengal in what was a last-over thriller to win the game.

Meanwhile, speaking of Mohammed Shami's performance in the last four games of the SMAT 2024, the Bengal pacer claimed four wickets. His notable performance with the ball in hand came against Hyderabad, where claimed a three-wicket haul and conceded 21 runs during his bowling spell.
