Electing to field first playing at the Arun Jaitley Stadium was a gutsy call by Sanju Samson itself, with the Delhi-based venue being relatively more on the side of teams batting first, with the strip having a well-renowned history of attritioning with the progression of most matches.
It was a tale of two halves for the Delhi Capitals, who kicked off proceeding with a bang, with five of the six powerplay overs going for 10 or more runs in a rewarding timeframe for the hosts. Jake Fraser-McGurk, the dynamic Aussie who's been on a scorching run this season, continued the good work, propelling himself to his fourth half-century in IPL 2024. His power-packed knock comprised a blistering 28-run over off Avesh Khan in the fourth over of the match. His partner, southpaw Abishek Porel, didn't hold back; with him stroking the exact same number of boundaries as Fraser-McGurk (seven fours and three sixes).

Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed both the batters, and his three wickets, including that of Axar Patel, sandwiched between the openers' scalps, slowed down DC's progress quite drastically. Rishabh Pant fell for the same score Axar got dismissed for (15), although playing three deliveries in excess than that of the latter left-handed batter. Tristan Stubbs proved to be the saviour for DC, who courtesy of his 41 off 20, laced with three fours and as many maximums, helped DC end up on a score of 221/8. Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal ended up with identical figures; both of them conceding 48 runs in their four overs each, taking a wicket apiece.
Chasing a target of 222 was never going to be a piece of cake, even for the likes of the Rajasthan Royals, who had had an upbeat campaign up until this game. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal departed back to the pavilion after a firs-ball four off Khaleel Ahmed, who avenged himself by dismissing the flamboyant batter. Impact Player, Jos Buttler, coming in place of Chahal, didn't add much value to the chase as well, underedging an Axar delivery onto his stumps. Samson, coming in only on the third delivery of the chase, batted beautifully to carry his team while Riyan Parag fell after getting a start of 27.

The wicketkeeper-batter tried his level best to bring RR as close as possible but had to depart after a splendid 86-run knock after getting caught at the long-on fence by Shai Hope, who took a really well-judged catch while hopscotching his way to execute it. A brilliant 18th over by Kuldeep Yadav, who grabbed a couple of wickets on the first and last delivery of the final over of his spell of Donovan Ferreira and Ashwin, respectively, granted DC a 20-run victory in the end, with Mukesh Kumar sealing a virtual win on the second delivery of the final over by getting rid of Rovman Powell, who to be fair, was the final beacon of hope for the visitors.
